Artist. Born in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1984. Fukasawa focuses on the special qualities of places and histories and the people connected with them, and presents projects throughout Japan that explore ways of existing with others. Recent major projects include Continuation of Myth in which a shrine was built to enshrine discarded materials washed up on shore as a modern-day hyochakushin (drifting flotsam regarded as a type of god), in a town where many hyochakushin legends remain (Oku-Noto Triennale, 2017); Remember Kantaro Dam which recreates a pond at the origin of the skating culture of Hachinohe (artist in residence, Hacchi, 2017); Hitachi-Satake City which attempts to obtain the sovereignty and culture of local people by reconnecting the area’s hidden history with the current times (Kenpoku Art, 2016); Homestay Museum in which participants stay at people’s homes in the countryside (satoyama) and collect documentation of local modernization (6th Echigo-Tsumari Art Field, 2015); and Tokuino Bank in which people use things they are good at as currency in place of money (Toride Art Project, etc., 2011-).
