Chikara Matsumoto

Artist

Painter and video animation artist born in Tokyo in 1967. Matsumoto graduated with a B.A. in Graphic Design from Tama Art University. He produces his video works by hand-drawing each frame on recycled paper, using a unique animation technique in which he backlights his drawings on a light box. He has spent the last 20 years working on spatial representation that merges images and music in exhibitions in Japan and overseas, as well as at live music venues in collaboration with Japanese electronic band “organ-o-rounge” and musician VOQ. He also holds workshops using his self-made video device the “Picture Scroll Machine” (the “Dancing Doll”) at schools, art museums, or wherever he happens to be.
Currently he is a lecturer in video on the Animation & Comics course at Sokei Academy of Fine Art & Design, and on the Visual Design course, Department of Design and Crafts, Joshibi University of Art and Design.
