Kyosaren Recycled Bottle Washing Center

Created in Akishima in Tokyo in April 1994 with the idea of connecting welfare and the environment, looking beyond disability classifications and seeking good wages for the disabled. Currently 87 people with disabilities work at the center cleaning bottles and reusable cups, making and selling tofu, sorting/bundling flyers and inserts, processing food, engaging in light work, and selling merchandise, etc. Kyosaren is classed as a “vocational aid center for people with mental disabilities,” and offers “support for continuous employment (type B)” and “employment transfer support.” The center’s aim is to realize a society where people with disabilities can lead an active working life and be safe and comfortable in their community.
